About the Westman Football Club (WFC)
What is Westman FC?
Westman FC is the competitive branch of the WRSA’s player pathway. Westman FC provides youth players U12 and older from WRSA with the opportunity to play soccer at the highest levels available in our province. Our 4 boys teams (U12, U13, U15 and U17s) compete in the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association League (WYSA League), and also enter tournaments throughout the year. Westman FC teams may also represent the WRSA at special competitions, such as the Manitoba Soccer Association (MSA) Cup.
We are in the process of forming girls teams, we understand that players/parents new to competitive soccer may not be ready for the commitment the WYSA League requires. Girls team competitions will be determined as teams are formed and will be tailored for team success.
Westman FC Competition Season
The WYSA league soccer season runs from the end of March through the end of October where teams are on the pitch a minimum of 3x per week. There is a league break in the month of July (no games but teams will still practice).
The indoor futsal season runs from November to March where teams practice 1-2x per week and there is a 2 week break in December/January during the holiday season.
Westman FC Player Evaluations/Team Selection
Evaluations will be held on a team by team basis, this year teams are holding tryouts December 3-13th, 2024. If a player who has other winter sport commitments makes the team, coaches ask them to be at practice when they are able.
Westman FC teams are selected based on player evaluations/assessments. Assessments are completed by coaches and independent evaluators under the supervision of the President of the WRSA board. The WRSA and Westman FC will post assessment dates/times/locations of assessments. Keep an eye on Westman Regional Soccer Association and Westman FC Facebook pages for evaluation updates.
At the bottom of this page, see our downloads tab for player/parent contracts and expectations.
Westman FC Location of Play
Practices for outdoor and indoor are held within the region's communities.
During the first few months of the WYSA season (March-May), and at the end of the season if necessary (Oct-Nov), games are played against Winnipeg teams in Winnipeg at their indoor turf facilities. May-October WYSA League games are played in Portage at the Rotary Republic of Manitobah Park. Occasionally, teams are willing to travel to our region for play and WYSA will schedule games in Brandon. In 2024 each team had one home game held at BYSA Park. A schedule will be provided to players at the beginning of each season. Teams often choose to travel for exhibition weekends or tournaments at various locations both in the US and in Canada.
Estimated Costs Associated with Playing Westman FC
Estimated Costs for the WYSA league season is estimated at $850-1200 per player per. These fees cover Manitoba Soccer fees & insurance premiums; WRSA administration, WRSA Technical Director salary, coach education, coach (non-parent) travel and accommodation as required for them to travel with the team, playing field/gym rental costs, referees for friendly matches, equipment, league and tournament entry fees, player kit (uniforms, track suit, back pack) etc.
There can be significant fluctuation in cost from year to year - specifically with the cost of indoor turf or gym rental. The WRSA participates in the BSD Gym Lottery, and in years that we are successful at obtaining discounted spaces or free gym rental, the savings are passed directly to the players; these savings are very substantial since the primary cost of our indoor program is turf/gym rental. There is no guarantee from year to year regarding success with the gym lottery, but the WRSA and Westman FC will continue to keep costs as low as possible without detracting from the quality of programming.
NOTE: Teams and Westman FC participate in fundraising and offer corporate sponsorship opportunities to assist in offsetting these costs. Whenever possible, they also utilize the same player kit for indoor and outdoor seasons, as well as for multiple years for returning players to help keep costs as low as possible.
Westman FC Player Expectations
In order to compete at the premiere level, Westman FC players are required to be dedicated to their team, their coach and to their own personal development as a player. We expect players to attend practices and scheduled games/tournaments regularly and on time, to actively listen to their coaches and work to implement what they are taught in practices, and to put their best effort forward at all Westman FC scheduled activities. We also strongly encourage Westman FC players to participate skill development on their own time (example ball work, watching games). Westman FC players must understand that when they travel to play, they represent the WRSA and its various communities. Players must act in a manner that is respectful and reflects the values of the WRSA as outlined in the player contract.
Westman FC understands term athletic development, and that multi-sport athletes may have some schedule conflicts. If you are a multi-sport player, please speak with your coach about this so that decisions can be made both in the best interest of the player and the Westman FC team.
